THE LECTURES

Week 5

Sir gave instruction and explaining the assignment before the start of consulting session for exercise. He said that there's 3 type of editorial text that I need to choose one of it. Then we need to use our knowledge in our type expression exercises and formatting text and do our project 1.

Also, the lecture video talks about leading, paragraph spacing which both of it must be the same to achieve cross alignment. I also learn the name term pilcrow. The video also talks about line space vs leading, indentation, widows and orphans. Also. when highlighting a text of type family, its better to reduce .5 for the point size of that type family if highlighting it with a bold text

Week 6
Firstly we have a consultation about the design that we were supposed to show to both lectures and get feedback on it for project 1. From the consultation, we get our feedback one by one and some are very helpful in helping me deciding what can I improve from my design. Also, when is my turn, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul gave a handful of feedback to me regarding my project and they prefer the third design.

Also, the lecture video talks about letters and designing it in typography. All the minor detail is very very important, how small details give a illusion about the symmetry of the shape of the font in designing text. Every font have their own quirkiness without overdoing it. There's need of consistancy in the all of the fonts and that way you give a flow to you font.

Project 1 - Text Formatting and Expression

Week 5

We were task to make somewhat like a brochure for the first assignment. The document specs for InDesign document must be 200mm x 200mm in size. I created a few pages so that I can make few examples at one go. The settings that I set for columns margin would be 10mm all around and 5mm gutter.

Then I set the margins for rows and columns so that my work is organize.

I choose the third editorial, which is the First Thing First Manifesto 2020. Firstly, I play with the headline font first. I try to play which typeface is suitable and pleasing to my eye.

Then, I align my text first and see which pointsize and leading is proper.

Then I start playing with the headline design. I just use InDesign to design my headline as it have enough tools and shapes to help me with. I also adjusted how I layout my words in my assignment,

Then I'm quite satisfied with this design I proceed to make other design which I play around with the arrangement of the names on the left page.

Then I add few more alternative design with different approach and style that I think its cool.

PDF 1.1 Final four design that I came up with

My first final thoughts would be that I choose the 2nd Design that I came up with because of its simplicity on the name for the first page and the flow of it continued to the 2nd page.

But, After receiving the feedback from Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul which design that I should go for, I went ahead with the 3rd design and also fix up the headline so it looks better.

THE REFLECTIONS

Experience
For me I found a lot of new things such as alignment is a key in designing your article, books or even a poster with words. Your headline also play the important role in making the content more engaging

Observations
I found out that I need more time in finding idea for headline and making it more better. It takes time and effort to tackle and create a good headline.

Findings
I learn a lot using InDesign tools and tricks thanks to Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul. I learn about how to cross align text with headlines and how this small things bring a lot to the mood of the readers.

by Oli Gardiner

This book talks about how you can distract users by using the graphical elements and what Headline you use. Also it help you how to use a banner in your websites to distract users or to attract their attention. I read this because it would be helpful to design the headline that I need to make sure the user Focus on the headline FIRST then move on to the main part of the text body. I helps me guide on how to design and align the body text also.
